Precision Inspection / Layout Grid Boxes
Air Cooled, Lighted    Bulletin 1700
These Layout and Inspection Boxes feature high precision Etched and Filled Glass Grids, with internal cooling* of the light box, to achieve unusually high NIST traceable, dimensional accuracy. When purchased with traceable calibration these Metrology Standards will assist you in meeting MIL-STD-45662A Calibration S ystem Requirements.

PRIMARY USES INCLUDE: CAD/CAM layout and inspection of computer generated photoplots and fiducials, tooling masters, and parts produced from these phototools and CAD/CAM Systems. Machine matrix positional accuracy determination for numeric controlled drilling, boring, laser cutting, graphic arts rubylith and film cutting, and other programmable X-Y manufacturing, robotic, and machine vision systems. Permanent Grid Layout system for manual PCB and graphic art composites.

These Metrology Grid Boxes are highly accurate and have been placed at key manufacturing facilities by several of our customers to standardize, control, and certify the output of their numerous Photoplotting and CAD/CAM Systems.
When used in conjunction with our PRECISION MICROSCALES or MICRORULES, off-grid targets and features can be measured to about ±:0.0002”.
GRID PATTERN MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE: To insure the maximum accuracy, each Light Box Grid is individually generated on our Laser Controlled Photoplotter, (The Autograph). This unique Photoplotter has an extremely accurate flat bed, direct plotting area of 60” X 60”. Each grid is therefore a Master Grid. The grid lines are then etched into the glass and filled with an opaque, black, white or red epoxy material that is resistant to all commercial glass cleaners. These extremely sharp lines are buried in the glass surface and cannot be worn off under normal use. These Etched and Filled Grids will yield many years of trouble free use. Bulletin 1100 explains the Autograph Photoplotter and Etch and Fill Process.
LINE WIDTHS, SPACING AND FEATURE SIZES: With the etch and fill process, grid Line Widths should range from 0.001” to a maximum of 0.030”; however, line widths up to 0.125” can be produced. Features such as Circles should be held to 0.250” diameter or less. For viewing grids with the unaided eye, Line widths in the range of 0.003” to 0.005” are usually specified.

Metrology Line Spacings of 0.100” and 1cm are common choices. Spacings of 0.100” or less on Large Grids should be avoided. Use larger spacings and our MICRORULE or MICROSCALE to measure accurately between the grid lines.

METROLOGY GRID ACCENTS: To aid in visual position identification, grid lines are accented at the 1.000” intersection points with 4 small dots. This feature is provided in lieu of having to vary the line width to accent the 1.000” location points on the Large Grids. This allows the user to measure from one line edge to any other line edge on the grid, as all line widths are nominally the same throughout the grid. Designated lines can also be numbered.
LIGHT BOX MODELS AND GRID SIZES: Seven basic sizes are available with either plain glass or a variety of standard or user specified grid patterns.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES: Light Boxes, depending on the size, are provided with up to 4 cooling ffans and 12- 30W Tubes. Dual light switches are provided on all Light Boxes for two illumination levels. Bottom access panels are provided on the MLA-6200 thru MLA-12600 Light Boxes to allow the user to change the 30W tubes without removing the Grid Glass.

Special patterns and features can be incorporated into the grid. See Metrology and Machine Vision Precision Grids and Targets.

*The Grid Glass has a coefficient of thermal expansion of 5.2 x 10-6 per ºF. Stable base film, 0.007” thick has a CTE of 13.9 x 10 -6 per ºF. This can cause a 36” glass grid to expand by as much as 0.0019” to 0.0037”; and a film grid to expand by as much as 0.005” to 0.010”.
